Fall in every corner of the world has its own way of transitioning from the summer months and here in Italy we best do it by following the seasonal changes in produce and hunkering down with some hearty Italian recipes in celebration of fall.
I have been living in Tuscany since 2012 with my Italian husband and children and one of our favorite things about fall is getting cozy indoors with some heartier foods while also enjoying the last days of summer outdoors on our terrace.
Luckily, fall is a time when we can enjoy a wide variety of local produce, allowing us to create so many delicious Italian recipes specific to the season. Read on to learn all about my top 10 Italian recipes for fall that we enjoy making year after year.

Italian Minestone

This hearty, chunky vegetable soup is built on fresh, seasonal produce, plenty of good olive oil, and—if you like—a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese. You’ll find it on Italian tables year-round, even on warm summer evenings but it’s my favorite in the fall and winter months.
When fall greens like kale, Swiss chard, spinach, and cabbage come into season, this Italian fall recipe takes on an extra green look.

Italian Apple Cake

Italian apple cake, or torta di mela, is one of Italy’s most simple yet memorable desserts (or Italian breakfast cakes). Moist, fragrant, and full of seasonal apples, it’s one of my favorite ways to enjoy fall flavors.

Castagnaccio

Castagnaccio is a classic Tuscan cake made from chestnut flour, olive oil, water, pine nuts, and raisins. Often scented with a sprig of rosemary, it’s a uniquely rustic blend of savory and sweet—an unmistakable taste of Tuscany in the fall. At home, I often swap in walnuts and golden raisins for a slightly different flavor profile.

Italian Focaccia

Any type of warm bread is one of my favorite Italian recipes to make for fall. Focaccia and schiacciata, two versions of Italian flatbread, are perfect with a warm bowl of soup or even as a warm snack after a long walk.
For a sweet version, try schiacciata all’uva, made with seasonal grapes.
Make It: Both focaccia and schiacciata are simple but the dough does need time to rest and rise to plan accordingly!
Fettunta

Served every year during the late-fall olive pressing season, fettunta highlights one Italian ingredient above all others: freshly milled olio nuovo. To make it, thick slices of white bread are grilled until crisp, rubbed lightly with raw garlic, sprinkled with a pinch of salt, and finished with a generous pour of bright green, peppery olive oil.

Risotto di Zucca
Risotto di zucca is a pumpkin risotto that is warm and filling, perfect for cooler days. I love to make this vegetarian Italian recipe during the fall months. You can use any basic recipe for risotto rice and add pureed squash or pumpkin to it right before you finish it with butter and parmesan cheese. A little grated nutmeg gives it a warm finish.
Fagioli all’uccelletto

For me, there is nothing better than a pan of cooked beans. Here in Tuscany we stew white cannellini beans with canned tomatoes, garlic, and sage, often served as a side dish or with sausages.

Bussolai Cookies

Also known as bussolà, buranelli or more recently nicknamed essi cookies, buranelli are small butter cookies most famously made on the small island of Burano. These are the perfect Italian cookies to enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee in the afternoon (or even for breakfast, as the Italians would do). When fall rolls around, these are a perfect recipe to make and enjoy with your family on chilly afternoons.
Where To Eat Them In Venice: Palmisano Carmelina is the most famous bakery in Venice for these cookies and other traditional Venetian pastry.
Make Them: Buranelli cookies are a fun recipe to make with kids. They can roll out the dough into small snakes and make the circles without adult assistance. Read my step-by-step instructions in Venetian Butter Cookies (Bussolai).
Italian Lentil Soup

Italian lentil soup is a very simple yet satisfying Italian recipe to whip up in the fall. I like this recipe because it keeps for days so I can eat it all week. With a crusty bit of bread and cheese, this is the perfect meal for me.

Arrabbiata Pasta

I love a good tomato sauce but sometimes in the summer it can be a bit too heavy for me in the heat. When October rolls around, I am totally ready for a good, homemade marinara sauce and not just any old type, but a spicy version! Just a bit of red pepper flakes and this arrabbiata pasta is next level good!
