Pasticceria Tonolo
Calle S. Pantalon, 3764, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy
Closed: Mondays
Specialty: Frittelle
Pasticceria Tonolo is one of Venice’s most famous spots for breakfast among the locals, especially in the winter when the bakery starts to make all the traditional Carnival desserts. This bakery is most famous for their pastries although you can find chocolates, cakes, and even savory snacks.
My favorite breakfast or snack items are the cream puffs, some with chocolate cream, others with chantilly or traditional pastry cream. They are a real bargain! If you prefer something lighter, choose from one of their many classic brioche.
Good To Know: If you happen to be in Venice during Carnival, come to Pasticceria Tonolo for their world famous frittelle, which you can order in various flavors and with different fillings such as pastry cream, pistachio cream and chocolate-hazelnut spread.
Pasticceria Dal Mas
Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, 150, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Everyday from 6:30/7:00 am to 7:30 pm
Specialty: Panettone at Christmas (make sure you know how to cut it!) and chocolates
There isn’t room to sit down at Pasticceria Dal Mas for breakfast. This is a no-frills, authentic, Italian bar with a great bakery, serving up coffee alongside some of the best pastry in Venice.
Pasticceria Dal Mas is my favorite place to come for breakfast around the Santa Lucia Train station in Venice, just a five minute’s walk away. Usually places by the train station in Italy are a little iffy but not here. This amazing bakery has not only one of the best selection of pastries, cakes, carnival treats and baked goods but also decent tramezzini and other snacks, making for a really good quick meal before you board your train.
Because of its location, this bakery is flooded with tourists but that doesn’t keep the locals away either. Dal Mas is where Venetians order their Christmas panettoni, holiday chocolates, local bussolai cookies, Venetian focaccia and winter treats such as frittelle.
Good To Know: Pasticceria Dal Mas has one of the best selections of prepackaged goodies to bring home as last minute gifts and souvenirs from Venice.
Marchini Time
Campo S. Luca, 4589, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily
Specialty: Cakes and fresh fruit pastries
Located between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco, this bakery in Venice is easily identified by the hoards of locals spilling out in the early morning as they come in for breakfast or stop by for coffee after lunch.
This is my top pick for the best bakeries in Venice for beautiful cakes and fruit pastries. You can order whole cakes or get slices to enjoy at their counter with a cup of coffee. Be quick though – this is a true Italian gem with no space or patients for taking up anyone’s time or overstaying your welcome. Eat and be gone, just as the locals do!
Pasticceria Chiusso
Salizzada dei Greci, 3306, 30122 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Thursday-Tuesday 7:00 am – 8:00 pm
Specialty: Pastries filled with rice pastry cream
By the looks of it Pasticceria Chiusso doesn’t seem very welcoming but I have learned over the years that some of the best bakeries in Venice (and Italy for that matter) should not be judged by their cover.
At Pasticceria Chiusso you can expect to find not only great pastries, Carnival specialties such as frittelle but also really good, strong coffee.
This bakery makes some of the best in all of Venice, making it my top pick for pastry lovers. Don’t miss their pastries filled with pastry cream with rice (an Italian specialty). I suggest having your coffee at the counter, standing, elbow to elbow with the locals.
And don’t miss all their seasonal goodies for sale in the window such as cookies, panettone, cakes and desserts.
Good To Know: Don’t be afraid to ask for some pastries to go. At Pasticceria Chiusso, they are happy to prepare a tray or small bag to go.
Panificio Crosera
Salizada S. Canzian, 5935, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Monday-Saturday
Specialty: Cookies
Panificio Crosera is easy to find because of the crowds but not easy if you are looking for a sign – it doesn’t have one! Located in the cute Cannaregio neighborhood, it’s a great place to stop in for a bag of cookies before heading to the Rialto Market or into the more downtown, central area of Venice.
I recommend Panificio Crosera for cookies, especially local butter cookies buranelli, pan del doge, cantuccini and zaletti cookies.
Rosa Salva
Sestiere di S. Marco, 950, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Monday-Saturday 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
Specialty: Frittelle during Carnival
Rosa Salva is my favorite pastry shop during Carnival in Venice as they make some of the best Carnival treats such as frittelle which can only be found in January and February.
Although Rosa Salva was first established as a bakery, it also serves some of the best breakfast in Venice paired with really good coffee beverages.
While you will find plenty of tourists at Rosa Salva, it’s chock full of locals as well. Located just off of the grand Piazza San Marco, Rosa Salva is one of the best places to stop in for a morning snack or even gelato in Venice.
In addition to pastries, Rosa Salva also has a wide selection of tramezzini to grab for lunch.
Tip: Avoid Rosa Salva between 7:30-8:30 am and 4:00-5:00 pm. Rosa Salva is a favorite among school children during these times before and after school when they come for breakfast or their merenda, after school snack.
Pastricceria Bonifacio
C. degli Albanesi, 4217, 30122 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Friday-Wednesday staring at 6:00 am
Specialty: Large buranei cookies.
It’s easy to miss Pasticceria Bonifacio. I missed it twice before tracking it down! The sign is faded and it’s on a narrow street but it’s worth stopping in if you are in the area for some of the rice filled pastries (Venetian tradition) and large buranei cookies.
Unlike other pastry shops in Venice, this one opens earlier than the others and closes mid-afternoon. They cater to all the locals, serving up various breads, small pizzette and a wide selection of sweet breakfast pastries (you can also get coffee here as well).
If you are hoping to get bread or other baked goods to bring back to your apartment or as takeaway, come early!
Colussi Il Fornaio
Campo S. Luca, 4579, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Monday-Saturday
Specialty: Fresh pasta
Colussi is one of the best bakeries in Venice if you are looking to pick up baked goods and homemade pasta. They have a wide selection of local breads (they sell out early) with a whole case of Venetian desserts, cookies and sweet treats, all of which can be purchased by the weight or purchased in already individually wrapped packages to bring home as souvenirs.
Colussi Bakery is one of the best bakeries in Venice for pizza, focaccia, and savory snacks or takeout.
And if you are looking to do a little cooking while in Venice at your apartment, don’t miss their chase of freshly made pasta (stuffed and egg pastas).
Baldin Romina
Cannaregio, 1291, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Monday-Saturday 6:30 am – 7:30 pm
Specialty: Baked goods, bread, cookies
Baldin Romina, just down the canal from GAM GAM in Cannaregio, is not far from the Santa Lucia Train Station, making it one of my favorite bakeries to stop at before boarding my train.
Although small, Baldin Romani is one of the best bakeries in Venice for pastries and bread but I suggest you stop by in the morning. Bakeries like this that don’t have coffees or specialize in cakes, tend to have a local client base. What does this mean? It means that the locals get their bread in the morning so if you want selection, you need to get here before lunch.
Palmisano Carmelina
Via Baldassarre Galuppi, 355, 30142 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 7:00 am – 8:00 pm
Specialty: bussolà or essi cookies.
Palmisano Carmelina is the most famous bakery on Burano, well known for their production of the typical Venetian cookie, the bussolà or essi cookies.
These round butter cookies can be smelt from the moment you get off the Vaporetto. Just follow your noise or ask for directions but this is a must if you visit Burano.
Palmisano Carmelina is also one of the best bakeries in Venice for other traditional Venetian pastry such as bricole, fragolini, limoncini, zaeti veneti, dogi, caorline, sbreghette, cocchini, peverini, and moretti.
