My Favorite Siena Restaurants for Lunch on a Day Trip

Planning where to eat in Siena and don’t want to waste a meal on a tourist trap?

I can help!

I’ve been living in Italy since 2012 and Siena is just an hour from my doorstep.

These are the restaurants, wine bars and cafes in Siena that I recommend. My recommendations are based on my own experience eating at each of them.

Whether for a quick lunch, a traditional Senese trattoria, a great glass of wine or the best breakfast in town, these are the spots I send friends and family to first.

Eating well in Siena is easy if you know where to go. The historic center is compact, which means you can plan your meals around sightseeing without much trouble.

Tip: I always recommend planning at least one meal in advance and booking a table, especially if you have your eye on Osteria le Logge or Taverna del Capitano.

Osteria Il Grattacielo

White plate with assorted cured meats, a crostino with liver pate, and vegetables under oil.

Best For: Sandwiches, quick lunch and casual first courses

Osteria Il Grattacielo is one of my favorite places in Siena when I want something fast, satisfying and a little removed from the busiest restaurant scene. It’s the kind of place I like for a quick lunch when I don’t want to commit to a long sit-down meal but still want to eat sitting down.

The grande piatto (a platter with cured meats, cheese, crostini, small bites and pickled vegetables) is what I had and exactly what I would order again, but this is also a great stop for sandwiches, quick bowls of pici or ribollita. I especially like that it feels slightly off the beaten path. The shaded area under the archway makes it particularly appealing in warm weather, and having both indoor and outdoor seating is a big plus.

Enoteca I Terzi

Entrance to Enoteca i Terzi in Siena, Italy. Man in cap sits at a table in front and looks at his phone. Other tables and chairs out front are empty.

Best For: Wine lovers

If you want a meal that leans a little more polished, Enoteca I Terzi is my top pick for wine lovers in Siena. It’s one of those places that feels special without being stiff, and it works equally well for lunch or dinner with a modern menu taking traditional Senese dishes to the next level.

The biggest draw here is, of course, the wine. But the setting matters too. Enoteca I Terzi is in Siena’s historic center on Via dei Termini, just a short walk from Piazza del Campo, and the interior is built around part of the medieval Torre dell’Orsa.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating, so it’s a reliable choice whether you want something cozy or prefer to sit outside.

Margheritè

White umbrella over metal tables and chairs on a stone patio. Margherite Siena is the text on the umbrella. Large glass windows show inside the restaurant in Siena, Italy.

Best For: A light lunch in Piazza del Campo

When I want to eat right on Piazza del Campo but keep things light, I head to Margheritè. I can rely on this quiet corner for its good location, a relaxed lunch and the kind of stop that fits naturally into a day of sightseeing.

The standout feature for me is the one excellent indoor table that looks directly out onto the square. There is also outdoor seating tucked along a side street, which I like when I want to be close to the action without sitting fully in the middle of it. Margheritè is right in Piazza del Campo inside Palazzo Piccolomini and positions itself as a café, drinks and light food stop.

Antica Trattoria Papei

Best For: A classic Senese trattoria experience

Papei is a beautiful, traditional Senese trattoria and one of the places I would recommend to anyone looking for that unmistakably old-school Siena feeling. If what you want is a proper trattoria meal in a historic setting, this is an easy choice.

I like it for a slower meal when I want a classic atmosphere rather than something trendy or modern. The restaurant has indoor seating, a veranda and outdoor tables in the warmer months.

Osteria le Logge

Best For: A splurge-worthy meal in Siena

Osteria le Logge is the place to be in Siena when you want one memorable, higher-end meal. It is expensive, yes, but this is the address I would choose for a splurge.

This is not my recommendation for every traveler or every day. It’s the place I would save for a special lunch or dinner when the meal itself is part of the occasion. Osteria le Logge is on Via del Porrione near Piazza del Campo, and it is listed by Michelin, making pre-booking your table a must!

Taverna del Capitano

Wooden table top with black paper placemat for '13 Mori.' White plate on placemat with pici pasta and a ragu sauce. Fork to the left and water bottle, glass, and paper bag with bread above.

Best For: Traditional Senese food in the heart of town

For traditional Senese food in the middle of Siena’s historic center, Taverna del Capitano is one of my all time favorite places in Tuscany. This is the kind of place that feels rooted in the city.

It’s near the Duomo and just a short walk from Piazza del Campo, which makes it very easy to work into a busy scheduled day.

What I especially love is the atmosphere inside. The décor with memorabilia from the Aquila neighborhood and references to the Palio gives it a distinctly local identity that a lot of visitors are looking for but don’t always find.

It’s very much a traditional Siena kind of meal rather than a polished special-occasion restaurant.

Bonus: Nannini

Best For: Breakfast, coffee and edible souvenirs

No list of where to eat in Siena is complete without Nannini.

For breakfast and coffee, this is my favorite classic stop in town. It’s more than just a café, though: it’s also one of the best places in Siena to buy edible souvenirs to bring home and see some of the greatest Senese life unfold.

This is where I would send anyone looking for traditional sweets such as ricciarelli and cantucci, and it’s also the right place to pick up something distinctly Senese before leaving town.

Tip: Be sure to try their famous nut and raisin bread, pan co’ santi, as well if you are visiting in October or November.

Final Thoughts

If I had just one day to eat in Siena, I would do breakfast at Nannini, a quick lunch at Osteria Il Grattacielo, and then choose Taverna del Capitano or Papei for dinner. If the budget allows for one standout splurge, make it Osteria le Logge.

And if wine or a break from traditional Italian cooking is your priority, book a table at Enoteca I Terzi.
