Montalcino Restaurants – My Favorite Montalcino Restaurants

Last updated on November 14th, 2024

After all that wine tasting in Montalcino, you are probably looking for something to settle your stomach. But what? When? Are you wondering if you need to book a table a week in advance?

I have been coming to Montalcino for over a decade at this point for both work and pleasure, giving me plenty of opportunity to scope out the local Montalcino restaurant scene.

In this article, I will highlight my absolute favorite Montalcino restaurants, including all the practical information you need such as booking requirements, best for and when they are closed.

And even if you have had so much wine you can’t seem to wrap your head around sifting through the entire article, fret not! Just refer to my chart below for a quick overview of Montalcino Restaurants and what they are best for.

Boccon Divino

Outdoor dining terrace with clear, glass 'walls' so you can see the view of the Tuscan countryside. There are tables set with white tablecloths and colorful glasses.

Via Traversa dei Monti, 201

Closed: Tuesdays

Boccon Divino is a Michelin Guide restaurant located in a scenic farmhouse just outside the city walls of Montalcino with sweeping views of the surrounding Southern Tuscan countryside.

The dining area is rustic but curated with an intimate indoor and outdoor dining area with modern tables, chairs and place settings. Enjoy authentic local dishes and an extensive wine list, even outdoors in the winter with the glass enclosed terrace.

Modern building lit up at night. You can see a sundial on the wall. It's the Azienda Pacenti in Montalcino, Italy.
Siro Pacenti is the ideal winery to visit just before lunch at Boccon Divino

Consider a Montalcino winery tour to Siro Pacenti or Conti Costanti Winery prior to your lunch, which is located just around the corner, about a 10 minute’s drive!

Good To Know: Book ahead and be prepared to give them your credit card number in case of cancellation. Boccon Divino is so popular that they will charge you €50 per person for no-shows!

Re di Macchie

Front entrance to Re di Macchie restaurant. Ivy over arched doorway. Stone and brick building. Terracotta pots on either side of the door.

Via Soccorso Saloni, 21

Closed: Thursdays

Re di Macchie was recommended to me by my husband’s cousin Anna Lisa and it just might be my favorite place. The moment you walk up to this restaurant you can feel the good vibes, authentic food and dedication to their clients.

My favorite is the duck with various sides, depending on the season, such as roasted potatoes or sauteed spinach or other greens.

Ristorante Il Giglio

Yellow building with glass doors and vines growing over the doorway. Sign for Ristorante il Giglio on left and sign for Albergo il Giglio on right.

Via Soccorso Saloni, 5
+39 0577 848167
Closed: For Lunch

Ristorante Il Giglio is sophistication at its best. The dining room is chic and the dishes are innovated yet with attention to local culinary traditions.

I used to come here when my brother-in-law worked in Montalcino but haven’t been back for two years. When I walked in the other day, the owner was very pleased to confirm that the restaurant has only grown in popularity and continues to remain a staple for locals.

La Sosta

Looking past the entryway and bar area to the dining room and outdoor dining area at La Sosta restaurant in Montalcino, Italy.

Via Ricasoli, 48
+39 0577 848230
Open 7 days a week

La Sosta is a really casual, easy going wine bar/restaurant located right in the heart of Montalcino, close to the Fortezza. They have both a back outdoor terrace overlooking the countryside and several tables on the street, which is the best location for people watching.

Plate of pasta on a white plate on a paper placemat. There is cutlery and water on the table.

If it’s raining, no worries, take a seat in either of their two indoor dining rooms. La Sosta is casual with paper placemats but the Tuscan food is reliable yet modern. I usually don’t eat a lot of seafood when I am on the mainland in Tuscany but here, their pici pasta with seafood is one of a kind!

For light snacks, opt for a glass of wine from their extensive wine list, a bottle and a cheese or charcuterie board

Tip: La Sosta is a great place to buy and try wines in Italy.

Caffè Fiaschetteria Italiana

White sign on building above entrance to Fiaschetteria Italiana cafe. The building is cream-colored with green shutters.

Piazza del Popolo, 6
+39 0577 849043
Closed: Thursdays

The Caffè Fiaschetteria doubles as both the most popular bar or cafè in Montalcino and also a casual eatery to get a quick bite. I would actually recommend this restaurant for more of a cafè than an actual long, leisurely sit down meal.

The Fiaschetteria is my top pick for quick eats and for the most lively and authentic casual experience. This is where the locals are and while plenty of tourists come here as well, this classic Italian bar is welcoming and unique, primarily catering to Italians.

It actually has a bit of a French vibe with its small, outdoor round tables with old timers reading the newspaper, sipping on coffee and chatting about soccer. Whatever you want, they have it: coffee, cappuccino, aperitivo, digestivo, snacks, first courses and more!

Vineria Le Potazzine

Glass doors are the entrance to the Vineria Le Potazzine in Montalcino, Italy. The hours are to the left of the door and the menu to the right.

Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, 9
+39 0577 846054
Closed: Thursdays

Vineria Le Potazzine is my top suggestion for Montalcino restaurants for families. It’s very casual and has not only a full menu with first and second courses but also a complete wine list, small bites, snacks and even sandwiches.

Typed menu displayed behind glass for an Italian restaurant. Menu in Italian with English translations.

The outdoor seating area is perfect to allow small children to run around in the square while you have a glass of wine.

Grotta Di Brunello

People look at the menu outside the Grotta del Brunello in Montalcino, Italy.

Costa di Piazza Garibaldi, 3
+39 0577 847177
Open 7 days a week

This is more of an enoteca or wine bar than a restaurant in Montalcino but it does have plenty of food options if you want to make a light lunch out of your visit to Grotta di Brunello.

Come here for their extensive wine menu, traditional Tuscan setting and the opportunity to buy wine to bring home as a gift or souvenir

Like most enoteche in the area, La Grotta di Brunello specializes in vino Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello but you will find other wines, including whites, making it a great place for anyone.

Tip: Nab one of the few tables along the street for the absolute best experience.

Bonus: Forno Val d’Orcia

Yellow building with glass doorway leading to a pastry shop and bakery. You can see the display cases inside.

Via Giuseppe Mazzini, 58
+39 0577 849530
Closed: Sunday

Although not a restaurant, Forno Val d’Orcia is so good that I couldn’t exclude it from my list of Montalcino restaurants. If you are looking for a quick snack, something to bring with you or a travel snack, come here but be sure to arrive early!

Last time I was here I popped in around noon and so much of their best pastries were sold out! I suggest you stop in before you go on your Montalcino wine tour and save your snack for later.

Planning A Lunch Out: If you are planning a day out at a Montalcino winery (or many), consider choosing one that serves lunch such as Santa Giulia.
