If you’re like me and would rather play it safe than sorry, then you might find yourself at Rome’s Termini train station waaay before your train leaves.
So why not pass the time eating some famous Italian food?
That’s certainly how I like to travel – not stressed for time and with a full belly.
You may have heard that the surrounding area of any train station usually isn’t the nicest. And yes, this is often true. But in Rome, there are some excellent eateries within a short walk, so lock up your luggage or drag it with you and fill up one more time before you leave the city!
These are my top places to eat near Termini train station. I’ve included:
- vegan options
- gluten-free options
- my favorite places within the station
- nearby trattorie with traditional Roman cuisine
Gelato Lovers: If you just want a quick gelato before heading out, the station has both Grom (good for gluten-free gelato) and Venchi (my favorite for chocolate gelato flavors).

Where to Eat Near Termini Train Station in Rome in Detail
For all of these restaurants near the Termini train station in Rome, I recommend pre-booking, if possible. If booking is not recommended, I will indicate below.
Mercato Centrale
Via Giovanni Giolitti, 36
Best For: A wide selection inside the Termini station
Distance: Located inside Termini Station
Mercato Centrale is the perfect stop for a quick bite without actually leaving the train station. Most of you are traveling with bags and so it makes it that much more complicated to actually eat around the train station (even if it’s only a 5-minute walk because it means lugging your bags with you).
This bustling cafeteria-style option located on on the back end of Termini station (walk through COIN department store or go outside and walk on the side of the train station and use the side entrance should you need fresh air) offers a wide array of freshly prepared dishes at affordable prices. Order from whichever stall you want and eat at the communal tables in the middle. Choose from literally anything you want including Italian food, sushi, Asian noodle bowls, roasted meats and of course, gelato and other Roman snacks.
Keep in mind that it does get quite crowded and if you pick a popular stand, you may have to wait in a long line, making it not the fastest option.
La Matriciana dal 1870
Via del Viminale, 44, 00184 Roma RM
Best For: Classic amatriciana pasta and other Roman pasta dishes
Distance: 7-minute walk from Termini
La Matriciana is renowned for its namesake dish, amatriciana, a tomato sauce flavored with guanciale (similar to bacon) and a bit of red pepper flake. This is a classic no-fuss Roman trattoria that over the years has made a name for itself with the tourists. And so yes, most of their clients are tourists but for good reason –the food is excellent and you are only 7 minutes from your train, making it one of my top picks for eating near the Termini train station in Rome.
Trattoria Monti
Via di S. Vito, 13
Best For: Hearty Italian home-cooking
Distance: 10-minute walk from Termini
Trattoria Monti is another small family-run restaurant just outside the Termini train station in Rome perfect for folks looking for a little bit of home cooking before they leave. I particularly like their secondi or main meat dishes.
Pasticceria Regoli
Via dello Statuto, 60
Best For: Maritozzi and sweet treats
Distance: 12-minute walk from Termini
Pasticceria Regoli is literally the first and last place I go before I get on my train. It’s one of Rome’s best bakeries, making some of the best maritozzi in the entire city. If you are on foot and headed to the station, pop in and grab a couple sweet snacks for the train ride. Or, recharge once arriving in Rome to get your maritozzi and coffee fix.
Trattoria Dell’Omo
Via Vicenza, 18
Best For: Traditional Roman menu
Distance: 5-minute walk from Termini
Trattoria dell’Omo is probably the best casual trattoria closest to the Termini train station in Rome. It’s just 5 minutes so even if you have bags with you, you can get a cab here and then walk the remaining distance to the station after your meal without worrying about getting another ride.
At Trattoria dell’Omo, expect to find a traditional Roman menu, meaning, different dishes on different days (for example, gnocchi on Thursdays).
Er Buchetto
Via del Viminale, 2F
Best For: Porchetta sandwich near Termini
Distance: 6-minute walk from Termini station
Er Buchetto specializes in traditional porchetta sandwiches, a must-try Roman street food. This hole in the wall caters to locals grabbing a quick snack or sandwich before heading back to work. No seating so if you want, ask for your panino con porchetta da portare via (to go) and eat it at the Termini station.
La Pasticciera
Via Varese, 43
Best For: Gluten-free travelers in Rome
Distance: 8-minute walk from Termini
La Pasticceria is the best bakery in Rome for gluten-free goodies and it also happens to be located not far from the Termini train station. They have a ton of sweet treats and some gluten-free savory items such as pizza. There is no seating so this is a to-go option only.
Rifugio Romano
Via Volturno, 39/41
Best For: Vegans in Rome
Distance: 7-minute walk
Rifugio Romano is the best place to go in general if you are a vegan in Rome and want to try classic Roman dishes. At this restaurant, they don’t try to make vegan alternatives but rather, adapt the culinary traditions to special diets. For example, they make vegan cacio e pepe and carbonara as well as pizza and fried appetizers.
