Last updated on February 22nd, 2025

If you’re dairy-free and traveling to the Eternal City Roma, fret not! There is plenty to eat and drink along that way that will keep you satisfied and coming back for more.

Rome is a great place to eat gelato with famous and reliable gelaterie in every single neighborhood. But where to go if you are dairy-free? Let me help! I have been living in Italy  since 2012 eating all sorts of gelato in Roma during these years.

Join me as I share with you my favorite spots to eat dairy-free gelato in Rome. For each gelateria, I’ll include:

  • what I like to order
  • what each is best for
  • what it’s close to

Whether you prefer classic fruit sorbets, bold and creative flavors, or organic options, these four gelaterie showcase the best dairy-free gelato that Rome has to offer.

Fact: Dairy-free gelato in Italy may be labeled as vegano (vegan) or sorbetto (sorbet).

Gelateria dei Gracchi

Sit on the bench out front or wander into Piazza del Popolo

Via dei Gracchi, 272 (Near Piazza del Popolo)

What to Try: Mandarin orange sorbet in winter, melon in the summer
Best For: Seasonal fruit sorbets

Gelateria dei Gracchi is renowned for using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Located just a short stroll from Piazza del Popolo, it’s a treat after visiting the main monuments in the Historic District.

I found this winter citrus flavors such as mandarin orange and grapefruit to be particularly good. In the summer though, they offer flavors such as melon and berry sorbets.

Otaleg

Via di San Cosimato, 14a  (Trastevere Neighborhood)

What to Try: Plum in the summer
Best For: Adventurous and unique flavors including dairy-free coffee (as pictured above)

Otaleg, cleverly named as “gelato” spelled backward, has earned a reputation for its bold and inventive approach to gelato-making. Situated in the local Trastevere neighborhood, Otaleg is my top pick for folks looking to try more creative and interesting non-dairy gelato flavors. Some seasonal fruit flavors may be simple but others are more complex and unheard of.

Tip: Make a day of it by exploring Trastevere’s culinary scene. Sample street food, enjoy aperitivi, and end with a sit-down meal at one of the area’s excellent restaurants.

Giolitti

I was in Rome in the summer but opted for dairy-free chocoalate and coffee since agrumi wasn’t seasonal. I did get whipped cream, I couldn’t resist!

Via degli Uffici del Vicario, 40 (Historic District near the Pantheon)

What to Try: Agrumi flavors (citrus)
Best For: People traveling with others who want regular gelato

Giolitti is the oldest gelateria in Rome with a wide selection of dairy and non-dairy gelato flavors to choose from, making it perfect for families or groups who want to try both non-dairy gelato flavors and regular gelato.

Be prepared for a bit of chaos during peak hours, as the ordering process can get hectic. Like many Italian bars, you must pay at the register and get your recipe before heading to the counter to order. Be firm in standing your ground as you work your way to the front.

Good To Know: Giolitti is also a bar serving up drinks, coffee and more, making it a good stop even if you aren’t in the mood for gelato (but who isn’t?).

Neve di Latte

Multiple locations, including Via Federico Cesi, 1 (Prati Neighborhood near Castel Sant’Angelo) and Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 140 (near Piazza Navona)

What to Try: Blackberry sorbet
Best For: Organic, biodynamic gelato

For those on the hunt for organic and sustainably made gelato, Neve di Latte is for you. With several locations across the city, this gelateria uses biodynamic ingredients and a commitment to quality. While they don’t have a long list of dairy-free gelato flavors, the ones they have are amazing such as blackberry and peach.
