Last updated on June 22nd, 2024

Chances are that if you have booked an apartment or accommodation in Venice without breakfast, you are curious where to eat the best breakfast in the city.

I am a mom of four living in Italy and when I come to Venice, you can be sure I am not booking a hotel. It’s always an apartment and thus, we always order breakfast out, which gives us the opportunity to try some of the best pastries and coffee that Venice has to offer.

In this guide, I will share with you my favorite spots to eat breakfast in Venice, Italy, including what each is best for and what their specialty is.

No matter your agenda, budget, or location in Venice, Italy, I have something for you!

Sullaluna Libreria & Bistro

Fondamenta de la Misericordia, 2535, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Daily 9:00 am – 11:30 pm

Sullaluna is where I suggest you go if you want to get off the beaten path and find a quiet nook to hunker down in and chit chat. It doesn’t open until 9:00 am, so if you are an early bird, consider Sullaluna for a seconda colazione or mid-morning snack, instead of your first breakfast stop in Venice.

Sullaluna is actually a bookstore, cafe and bistro, all tied into one. It’s small, with only about seven tables indoors and eight or so outdoors but it’s charming and warm. The walls are lined with a carefully curated selection of Italian books (and some English), broken up by plenty of plants and flowers.

They don’t have an enormous selection for breakfast but they offer vegan breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner options as well.

It’s right on the canal, away from the herds of tourists on Rio della Misericordia in Cannaregio (one of Venice’s most underrated and undiscovered neighborhoods in Venice).

Good To Know: Barao del Gelato, one of my top picks for best gelato in Venice, is just next door.

Torrefazione Cannaregio

Fondamenta dei Ormesini, 2804, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Daily from 8:00 am

Torrefazione Cannaregio is the best place to eat breakfast in Venice if you are looking for craft coffee, an authentic, hip vibe and off the beaten track. Located in the undiscovered neighborhood of Cannaregio in Venice, Italy, this cafe is a fantastic place to come and grab a traditional Italian breakfast without breaking the bank.

Torrefazione Cannaregio caters primarily to students and locals. The coffee is some of the best in Venice, with craft coffee blends and single roasts to drink at the cafe and take home as souvenirs.

Torrefazione Cannaregio is rustic and casual, located right on the Fondamenta Dei Ormesini / Canal Rio Della Misericordia, perfect for people watching if you can nab one of the few tables outdoors on the canal. If not, don’t fret, the indoors is lovely and bright, making you want to spend all morning inside sipping on some of the best coffee in Venice.

I suggest Torrefazione Cannaregio for families or travelers who are looking for an authentic Venetian experience off the beaten path. You won’t be bogged down by the prices and the quality doesn’t get much better. You can come and enjoy something sweet and a hot beverage for just a couple of euros.

Good To Know: Ask their staff for coffee recommendations and they are happy to bag up their whole beans to bring home as a gift or souvenir.

Caffè Florian

P.za San Marco, 57, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Daily 9:00 am – 11:00 pm

Caffè Florian is one of Venice’s most famous and oldest bars and cafes, serving up some of the best coffee, breakfast and desserts in all of Venice. This historic cafe caters primarily to tourists but this is not a reason to avoid it.

Historically, Caffè Florian has always been a gathering place for famous intellectuals such as Proust, Dickens, and Casanova and even today, you can feel the life and spirit through the hustle and bustle.

Caffè Florian is my top pick for breakfast in Venice if you want to splurge. You will find traditional Italian breakfast but also, international favorites as well. The coffee is also some of the best in Venice.

The cafe has several elaborately decorated rooms and a large, outdoor seating area right in Piazza San Marco. This is where you want to be if you want to relax over breakfast, take in the air of Venice and soak up the sun.

Note that this is definitely one of the most expensive options for breakfast in Venice.

Good To Know: Caffè Florian is also a great place to sit down for an aperitivo in Venice in Piazza San Marco.

Pasticceria Dal Mas

Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, 150, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Everyday from 6:30/7:00 am to 7:30 pm

There isn’t room to sit down at Pasticceria Dal Mas for breakfast. This is a no-frills, authentic, Italian bar with a great bakery, serving up coffee alongside some of the best pastries in Venice.

Pasticceria Dal Mas is my favorite place to come for breakfast around the Santa Lucia Train station in Venice, just a five minute’s walk away. Usually places by the train station in Italy are a little iffy but not here.

This amazing bakery has not only one of the best selection of pastries, cakes and Carnival desserts but also good sandwiches and other snacks making for a really good quick meal before you board your train.

Because of its location, this bakery is flooded with tourists but that doesn’t keep the locals away either. Dal Mas is where Venetians order their Christmas panettone (make sure you know how to cut it!), holiday chocolates, local bussolai cookies, Venetian focaccia and winter treats such as frittelle

Good To Know: Pasticceria Dal Mas has one of the best selections of prepackaged treats and chocolate to bring home as souvenirs or gifts from Venice.

Rosa Salva

Sestiere di S. Marco, 950, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Monday-Saturday 8:00 am – 8:00 pm

Opened in 1870, Rosa Salva is my top recommendation for pastry lovers in Venice, serving up some of the best breakfast in Venice, Italy paired with amazing coffee from sun up until sundown.

Located just off of Piazza San Marco, Rosa Salva is one of the best places to stop in for a morning snack or breakfast in Venice if you need mid-morning fuel.

I have only been to the Rosa Salva in San Marco but they have four locations in Venice now!

Rosa Salva has made its name over the centuries with its impeccable reputation for baked goods, cakes and classic breakfast pastries. You can count on bumping into many tourists but it will also be full of locals.

My biggest tip for visiting Rosa Salva is to avoid it between 7:30-8:30 am and 4:00-5:00 pm as this is when the bar is flooded with school children coming in for breakfast before school or their merenda or after school snack.

Good To Know: Rosa Salva is also a good spot for a tramezzino or Carnival treats in the New Year.

Pasticceria Tonolo

Calle S. Pantalon, 3764, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy

Closed: Mondays

Pasticceria Tonolo is one of Venice’s most famous spots for breakfast among the locals. This bakery, is most famous for their pastries and is the main reason I came here but I ended up coming back the next day for their whole breakfast experience.

Don’t expect a leisurely, slow breakfast here but rather, a traditional, no fuss, coffee and pastry in hand breakfast alongside Venetians.

My favorite are the large cream puffs, some with chocolate cream, others with chantilly or traditional pastry cream. If you prefer something lighter, opt for one of the flaky Italian paste or croissants.

Good To Know: If you happen to be in Venice during Carnival, come to Pasticceria Tonolo for some of the best Carnival treats in Venice such as frittelle.

Farini

Open: Daily 7:30 – 9:00 or 10:00 pm.

Farini is a local chain in Venice with four locations, strategically dotted in convenient locations throughout the city center.

Farini is a great place for a casual, typical Italian breakfast without the price tag. I highly recommend Farini for families as there is ample seating, no table service fees and plenty of options.

It’s also very casual so you don’t have to worry about your kids making a mess or being loud.

Farini makes a great place to pop in anytime of the day for a snack, quick sandwich or slice of pizza at any time (they don’t close in the afternoons after lunch).

Caffè Rosso

Sestiere Dorsoduro, 2963, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy

Open: Daily

Caffè Rosso is my top pick for travelers who are looking to have a casual, Italian breakfast with good coffee in an authentic, off the beaten track piazza in the cool Dorsoduro neighborhood. This is one of those French style cafes where you can sit down for hours sipping on coffee outdoors without feeling rushed or pressured by the staff.

Located In Campo Santa Margherita, this is one of the best squares to sit outdoors and catch some morning rays over a cup of coffee. This is one of my favorite spots to come with kids because after they have finished eating, they can play freely in the large square (no canals or other water dangers in the square).

Caffè Rosso is not only one of the  best places for breakfast in Venice but is also a great cafe to stop in for an aperitivo before dinner in Venice. This cafè has a very relaxing atmosphere with a ton of great restaurants and bars on each side of the square.
