If you are crunched for time in Venice and need to catch your train but don’t want to sacrifice all the goods eats in Venice, then read on to discover my top picks for where to eat before catching your train at the Venice Santa Lucia train station.
I have been on countless trains to and from Venice over the course of my twenty years traveling and living here and these are my top spots to stop in and grab a bite to eat before boarding my train in Venice (or as I step off). I’ve included restaurants, pizzerias, gelaterias and bakeries near the station.
It’s easy to underestimate how long it takes to get to the Venice Santa Lucia train station. What looks like a quick walk on the map takes forever when the narrow streets are crowded. And, vaporetti lines can be long. Don’t miss your train – eat near the station!

Pasticceria Dal Mas

Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, 150, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Everyday from 6:30/7:00 am to 7:30 pm
Specialty: Artisan chocolates and pastries
Pasticceria Dal Mas is my favorite place to come for breakfast or a sandwich around the Santa Lucia Train station in Venice, just a five minute’s walk away. If you want to order their traditional Venetian pastry or sandwiches to-go, no problem, they are happy to wrap it up for you.
Don’t expect to sit down and have a leisurely meal, coffee or breakfast at Pasticceria Dal Mas. Instead, order your coffee and some of the best pastries in Venice and enjoy it standing at the counter.
This amazing bakery has not only one of the best selection of pastries, cakes, Carnival treats and baked goods but also decent sandwiches and other snacks, making for a really good quick meal before you board your train, including local bussolai cookies, Venetian focaccia, artisan chocolates and panettone around Christmas.
Good To Know: Pasticceria Dal Mas has one of the best selections of prepackaged treats to bring home as souvenirs from Venice.
Pizzeria Ae Oche Santa Lucia

Cannaregio, 158, 30100 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Everyday
Specialty: Pizza
Pizzeria Ae Oche has done so well for itself that it has opened another location in Piazza San Giacomo as well, a great place for eating with kids.
I must admit that pizzeria Ae Oche does seem a bit touristy but the pizza is reliable and you can even order vegan pizza as well as decent pastas.
They have indoor and outdoor seating in a casual setting with wooden tables and paper placemats, making it a good place to pop into even if you have your suitcase with you (as long as it’s not too big!).
Gam Gam

Cannaregio, 1122, 30121 Venezia VE
Open: Lunch and dinner (closed Saturday)
Speciality: Kosher food
Gam Gam is located in the quiet neighborhood of Cannaregio in the Jewish Ghetto in Venice with an ample indoor area and an outdoor seating area along the Canal di Cannaregio with a view of the Guglie Bridge.
Gam Gam is my top pick for eating before you board your train if you are vegan, vegetarian or looking for a kosher meal. The restaurant has been in business for over three decades, run by a historic Venetian Jewish family.
The offer traditional Mediterranean dishes such as hummus, fish, couscous, kabab, schnitzel, latkes, and falafel but also Italian specialities that cater to kosher diets including local pasta dishes.
I highly suggest you call and book your table, especially if you want to sit along the canal!
Frito Inn

Campo San Leonardo, 1587, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: 24 hours!
Specialty: Fried fish, known as scartosso de pesse fritto in the local Venetian dialect.
Frito Inn is a tiny hole in the wall serving fried fish street food in Venice 24 hours a day! This small detail is important as there are very few places in Venice where you can eat around the clock.
The fried fish cones are made to order so be prepared to wait if there is a line. There is no sitting so eat your food standing before you board your train or after you get off and head to your accommodations in Venice.
Choose from mixed fried fish, just scampi, just octopus, mixed scampi and octopus and many other fried fish combinations.
Gelateria Alaska

Calle Larga dei Bari, 1159, 30135 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 10:00 am – 7:30 pm
Specialty: Gelato
Gelateria Alaska may not look very nice but it’s worth a visit if you are close to the Santa Lucia Train Station.
Gelateria Alaska has standing-room, specializing in odd-flavors such as artichoke, ginger and tomato! Don’t worry though, you can always find the usual flavors as well.
Tip: For families who don’t all want gelato, there is a decent bar just next door, perfect for sitting down and ordering a drink, cocktail, coffee or other beverage.
Venchi

Stazione Santa Lucia, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily
Specialty: Chocolate gelato and other chocolates including souvenirs
Venchi is an Italian chocolate chain store in Italy and in Venice, it has three locations, one right in the Santa Lucia Train station. It’s the perfect spot to pick up last minute souvenirs and grab one last gelato in Venice before boarding your train.
Venchi is my favorite spot for gelato in Venice for chocolate-lovers. They also make excellent hot chocolate to enjoy in the winter and made-to-order crepes filled with their own chocolate hazelnut spread (choose from milk for dark chocolate), which you can also bring home with you.
Tip: If you don’t have time to stop in at the Santa Lucia Train station, you can check out Venchi in both Florence and Rome.
Baldin Romina

Cannaregio, 1291, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Monday-Saturday 6:30 am – 7:30 pm
Specialty: Bread, cookies
Baldin Romina, located right next door to GAM GAM on the Canal di Cannaregio, is just a short walk from the Santa Lucia Train Station, making it my favorite bakery in Venice to stop at before boarding my train.
Baldin Romina makes some of the best cookies to pick up and bring with you before you leave Venice. Although open in the afternoon, it’s best to stop here if you have a morning train because the bakery is small and caters primarily to locals (meaning they sell out quickly and don’t keep restocking their shelves all day like other bakeries in Venice).
Specialties include cookies like zaletti, biscotti veneziani, essi and frosting covered cookies for kids!
Vini Da Gigio

Sestiere, Calle Stua Cannaregio, 3628A, 30121 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Wed-Sunday 12:00-2:30 pm/7:00-10:30 pm
Specialty: Refined Venetian cuisine
Vini Da Gigio is a refined upscale Venetian restaurant with some of the best local wines in the whole city in an elegant atmosphere right on the canal.
If you don’t know about Vini Da Gigio, it’s easy to miss but once you know, I guarantee you will make time to book a table everytime you come to Venice.
Their menu changes seasonally as they take part in a new initiative or farmshare, “Osti in Orto” with all their produce coming from Osti, one of the small Venetian islands.
Vini Da Gigio is a great place to try and buy wines while sampling some of Venice’s most traditional local dishes.
Good To Know: You can’t order cicchetti and a glass of wine to have standing but cicchetti will be on their menu under appetizers.
Other Food Options Before Boarding Your Train In Venice

Looking for supermarket snacks to grab before boarding your train in Venice? Check out these two options:
Supermercato DESPAR Cannaregio

Well-stocked and especially good for prepared meals in the refrigerator section including tramezzini and other salads.
Conad
SESTIERE SANTA CROCE, 892, 30135 Venezia VE, Italy
Years of food shopping for my family in Italy has made me a loyal customer to the Conad grocery store. The quality is excellent and they have a special gourmet line Sapori e Dintorni.
San Leonardo Market

Campo San Leonardo, 30100 Venezia VE, Italy
Located in Campo San Leonardo not far from the Santa Lucia Train Station, this market is one of my favorite places to pick up some fresh produce (open until 5:30 pm Monday-Saturday) before boarding my train. For more on markets, read Markets in Venice Worthy of a Visit.
