How many times have you been traveling abroad and just needed some takeout to get away from the crowds and take a night off from “dining on the town?”
Eating out is fun but it’s also expensive, especially in Venice. I am a mom of four and when we go to Venice, I simply can’t handle taking my kids out to eat every night (breaks the bank and I lose my mind!) so takeout in Venice is the way to go.
Whatever you reason, there are plenty of delicious takeout options for you in Venice. In this article, I will share with you my top takeout places in Venice. They’re scattered around the city center, making them accessible from most accommodations in central Venice.
I will share with you:
- what I like to order
- what each takeout place is famous for
- who will enjoy each takeout spot (families, students, etc)
For those of you in a rush, check out my quick guide and takeout in Venice map to decide quickly, on the go, without wasting time wandering around and potentially ending up in a tourist trap!

Rosticceria Gilson
Calle de la Bissa, 5424/a, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 9:00 am – 9:30 pm
Rosticceria Gilson is hands down my favorite takeout spot in Venice because of its wide selection of high quality food in a great location.
Choose from traditional Venetian street food such as mozzarella in carrozza and tramezzini to eat standing at the bar or at the window counters. You can also choose to order more substantial options like lasagne, seafood salad, grilled seafood skewers, whole grain salads, vegetables of the day, and other prepared meats.
If you choose from the first and second courses, you can choose to have the food wrapped up for you to take home or grab one of the small tables and enjoy the food warmed up for you.
I have tried Gilson several times, each time noticing a different crowd. If you come before noon, expect to see locals having a small sandwich and beer or glass of wine. Between noon and two is the lunch rush, bringing in all sorts of clients, including families, groups of friends and individuals on their lunch break. For the best lunch selection, plan to eat on the earlier side.
If you don’t need a whole meal but are looking for a snack, ask for a tramezzino already wrapped up to take with you on the go.
Good To Know: They have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options to choose from.
SEPA
Calle de la Bissa, 5482, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 11:30 pm – 10:00 pm
SEPA is centrally located right off the Rialto Bridge, not far from the open air market, selling a wide selection of pre-prepared foods, fried Venetian bites as well as a wide selection of cicchetti to eat standing at the bar or window counters.
SEPA specializes in making good food fast, which you can take out or eat in. Unlike other gastronomie, there is no sitting space. Instead, SEPA’s wall space is lined with chest high counters where you can take your meal and enjoy standing. SEPA caters primarily to locals looking to eat a quick bite before heading back to work.
If you want to order a couple cicchetti, you will be given the choice to choose from either a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or bottle of red or white wine, which they will fill up for you at their on-tap spigots in the back room. If you prefer beer, SEPA has one of the largest selections of craft beers from Veneto.
Bring It Home: SEPA also has a small selection of their packaged cicchetti spreads to bring home as a gift or souvenir.
Order at the counter, pay and take your food to one of the pre-set standing room places.
I came to SEPA to have a couple cicchetti but if you come at 1:00 sharp, you can order their risotto of the day, which will be posted on the board.
Other favorites include fried meatballs and vegetable based balls, savory pies, grilled vegetables, and roasted second courses.
Tip: If you are traveling with small children, I don’t recommend eating here because they don’t have seating. Instead, read Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Venice.
Acqua E Mais
Campiello dei Meloni, 1411/1412, 30125 Venezia VE
Open: Daily 9:30 am – 8:00 pm
Acqua E Mais is not only one of the best places to buy takeout food but also for street food. They make some of the best fried fish served in a large paper cone in all of Venice.
Choose from their daily specials, displayed in the glass cases including fried food, mozzarella in carrozza, fresh seafood specialties and even baked foods such as large, soft pretzels.
Many Venetians come to Acqua and Mais to grab a snack and a small glass of wine to enjoy on the street (no indoor seating). If you need to bring something home, just ask to have it wrapped up.
Pizza Al Volo
Sestiere Dorsoduro, 2944, 30123 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 11 am -2 pm
Pizza Al Volo is one of Venice’s most famous takeout pizzerias, listed in almost any guide book but because it’s off the beaten track, it doesn’t get nearly as much traffic as it deserves.
At Pizza Al Volo you can either order a whole pie or order pizza by the slice and eat it in Campo Santa Margherita alongside the locals.
This pizzeria also makes the cut for the best places to grab a bite with kids because of its great location. Away from canals with plenty of space to run freely, this pizzeria is great to get a bite to eat for your kids if you are still enjoying your coffee, drink or cicchetti.
Good To Know: Located just around the corner is Gelateria Il Doge, one of the best gelaterias in Venice.
Osteria Al Portego
Calle de la Malvasia, 6014, 30122 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 11:30 am – 10:00 pm
Osteria Al Portego is a great place to order takeout from but also makes my list for best places to drink after dinner, best aperitivo spot and a great place to get cicchetti in Venice.
You can choose to eat at one of their casual indoor tables or ask for their classic Italian fare from their menu to go, which they are happy to prepare for you. You can also order the food displayed in the window counter such as their seafood skewers, savory flans and pies or meatballs if you are in a super rush.
Fried Land
Campiello dei Fiori, 2287, 30100 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily 11:00 am – 10:00 pm
Just the name Fried Land made me cringe. It couldn’t sound more cheesy or touristy but after reading rave reviews, I had to try it.
Just one look at the small door to Friend Land and I knew it was going to be good. In my experience eating in Italy, it’s the smallest places that are seemingly uninteresting that turn out to be hidden gems, and Fried Land is just that.
Depending on what time you go, you may be able to identify it by the long line. Other times, just look for a small doorway. Inside, the fried fish cones known as scartosso de pesse fritto, are made to order, one batch at a time, from the fresh catch of the day.
Other favorites include the local Venetian pastas such as spaghetti al nero di seppia, (spaghetti with squid ink), served in a Chinese take out container.
Fried land is the best take out food to actually be eaten right away, not heated up later, of course, you can heat it up but most people get their food to go and eat it standing or sitting along the canal.
Located in the authentic Cannaregio neighborhood, Fried Land caters primarily to students or younger folks on a dime. However, it’s recently gained attraction and it’s more recently full of tourists as well.
Cantina Do Spade
San Polo, 859, 30125 Venezia VE, Italy
Open: Daily
Cantina Do Spade is first and foremost a bacaro, secondly a restaurant, and most recently, offers a really good take-out menu.
The restaurant offers classic Venetian dishes done right. I suggest Cantina Do Spade for people who are looking to spend a little extra on their takeout. The prices are reasonable but certainly higher than typical street food or pre-prepared foods that come from tavole calde.
Call in your food (view menu on their website) or pop in and order at the counter.
